1950: 1st Hour with the Developer of Chiropractic

It was 8:02am, Monday morning, and my Dad had just sat down in his chair of the classroom of his very first hour of chiropractic education when Dr. B.J. Palmer went over to the classroom door and locked it! He had been told that "You'd better be there on time or Dr. Palmer will lock you out!"

What an attitude for an instructor, after all, he was originally going to attend Harvard Business School and get his Masters. My Dad thought, "Naaa, surely, not!", but he didn't want to take any chances, so he showed up early to class just in case. My Dad had heard of this action by Dr. Palmer occurring, but didn't believe it until it actually happened. And Yes, it happened! Dr. Palmer proceeded to the door, locked it, and started an hour long lecture that my Dad said felt like five minutes. Dr. Palmer was so passionate that every single person was enthralled and on the edge of their seats the entire time. In fact, you didn't dare to speak either as Dr. Palmer would probably kick you out!

Dr. Palmer was a very dynamic and charismatic person, which was needed back in the 1920's to 1960's, for the chiropractic profession to survived the dogmatic pressures brought on by the medical field. Interesting enough, the modern medical field was only 20 years older than chiropractic! The battle of economics were prevalent even back then.

That first hour was so dynamic that my Dad, as well as many other students, went on to be great pioneers in our field. Some create colleges, some had the biggest practices ever recorded, and some even went to jail for this profession, as my Dad did! He was so inspired and the experience was burned into his memory that he could tell me that story many times over the last thirty or so years.

In fact when my Dad went back home on fall break, he told his Dad's closest friend, a medical doctor, that "chiropractic was going to take over the health field and shut down the need for the medical pharmaceutical approach!" My Grandfather quickly pulled my Dad aside and told him that "Until you've been in practice for over 25 years you have no room to talk and don't embarass me!""

What a great story and time that had to have been!

My Head Hurts Daddy!

When growing up in the chiropractic community, I didn't know what was a headache. I only knew my head didn't feel right and I would promptly say to my Dad, "Daddy my head hurts. Can I get an adjustment?" No, I didn't take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc. Thus, I would respond very quickly and was on the right health and wellness path of existence in America, even before people had any idea of the long term damaging effects of these simple over the counter drugs.

How about the Flu? No, I didn't take anything either. I would get my adjustments, take mutiple kinds of whole food supplements, and promorphogen supplements. I would be over the latest "bug" in 48 hrs, never missing school for all my 12 years in Sapulpa. In fact, most people never knew that I was even under the weather. Yet, I would watch time and time again my peers take days and sometimes weeks to get over a variety of ailments all the way up to the Flu.

Now 45 years later, I look to my peers and see how unhealthy they have become. Look at their skin, their eyes, or even how their physique looks and you can easily see the long term effects of these drugs first handed! Did I make this decision myself? Of course not. I was directed by my Dad and Mother to utilize natural approaches to health and it has greatly paid off many dividends fold!

Today, along with my wife, am passing this chiropractic approach to health and wellness to our own kids and seeing the same results - tremendous recovery times of healing when exposed to the latest "bug". It takes a very concerted effort for the average person, who has been inundated with television and radio ads for years, to even see beyond this brain washing effect on society. "Say no to drugs, but here's your latest drug for _____." -what an oximoronic approach to life.

People please educate yourself and look to new ideas outside, around and beyond the boxes we have been limited to for years!

Are You Drinking the Koolaid?

So many people never question so called authorities of society. Many can be found in the health industry, such as the pharmaceutical and medical associations. Lobbying efforts and funding research on their behave have resulted in extremely biased data - some of which has since been found to be very damaging and even deadly.

My Father didn't drink the koolaid. In fact, he chose to be the pioneer of a newly developing profession in the late 1950's - Chiropractic. Imagine a time where no one ever questioned their medical doctor, after all they were the next thing to God back then.... Now, a different story. And yet, my Father, who's grandfather was a Medical Surgeon, chose to walk a different new and exciting path. Little did he know that his life would be so interesting and adventurous!

Today, more and more of us are questioning self-imposed authorities of society in general, especially the healthcare system. Remember, only you can make a change in thinking, habits and lifestyles that impact your health and even epigenics, a new science of genes, has found we determine our own future - not a predisposed thought or gene. Step out of your skin and revisit your current thinking and behaviors to explore new health - Wellness!

Don't wait until you're so unhealthy from living what you were told is a healthy lifestyle of "______" and wake up one day regretting the choices determined for you by others. Own your life, take back your life and remember:

"Live For Today". My father went into the hospital January '09, Passed April '09, but in his last days he shared he wanted to sale his practice, work part-time in mine, spend more time with his grand kids, take my Mom to Sweden, maybe go to the Chiropractic Colleges and speak since they have been on him for years, share his passion with the ...future of chiropractic. So before your Tomorrow is Gone, "Live for Today & Live with Passion"
